Ascent Scientific today announced that they have launched RuBi-Nicotine, a novel light-sensitive, caged ligand that will advance research into addiction, cognition and synaptic signaling.

Caged compounds consist of a bioactive molecule (the ‘caged’ compound) that is temporarily inactivated by being bound to a chemical group (the "cage" moiety). By breaking this bond with light, the bioactive molecule can be "uncaged" and activated.

RuBi-Nicotine is the most recently created caged molecule from the family of RuBi caged compounds, developed by Professor Roberto Etchenique from the University of Buenos Aires and Professor Rafael Yuste in the Department of Biological Sciences at Columbia University and an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. RuBi-Nicotine, licensed from Columbia University, is the first caged nicotine to be made commercially available. The compound has extremely fast uncaging kinetics, high water-solubility in physiological conditions, and can be activated by visible wavelengths of light. There is no need to use harmful UV light (which is deleterious to living tissues), the equipment does not require expensive quartz optics and uncaging can occur at much faster speeds due to the single photochemical step involved in the light-sensitive uncaging process.

Rafael Yuste comments, “RuBi-Nicotine is another breakthrough for the field. It enables the optical control of cholinergic transmission in the mammalian Central Nervous System, and will also be particularly important for Invertebrate Neuroscience, since it could allow the turning on of individual neurons or parts of the neurons, given that acetylcholine is the major excitatory transmitter in invertebrate preparations.”

Steve Roome, Ascent Scientific’s Commercial Director comments, "RuBi-Nicotine joins a growing toolbox of caged ligands that already includes RuBi-Glutamate, RuBi-GABA and RuBi-4AP, and that are suitable for use in optical experiments on living tissue. RuBi-Nicotine is the first commercially available caged nicotine and Ascent Scientific is delighted to be the first supplier to offer this to the life science community. We anticipate that this ground-breaking tool will greatly advance research in areas such as addiction and cognition.”

Ever changed your relationship status to “It’s complicated” or “Is single”? Immediately, 37 of your Facebook friends will be posting on your wall, wondering “What’s happened, are you OK?” Instead, on MindofTwo.com registered users can post the entire story of how, when and why things became complicated. Other users may chime in about similar past experiences, or just lend a sympathetic ear. There is also a Video Confession section on this free site, a popular option where members may upload a video recorded and edited using the masking software of their choice. Oftentimes, people keep their past experiences bottled inside and when they attempt to move forward in their lives, they carry the emotional baggage with them and that “thing” always seems to follow them wherever they go. MindofTwo’s motto is, “Why not free yourself!”

Yes, Facebook may count 500 million users on their site, but not everyone wants to open up online about their deepest secrets to any of their 300 closest “friends.” Why risk judgments and criticisms, or potential misunderstandings? “JohnDoe99” has switched to MindOfTwo, a social networking site that offers a safe, anonymous space to share experiences with others, not necessarily looking for a definitive resolution, but finding comfort and support in knowing that one is not alone when facing a particular dilemma.

Staying private on Facebook isn’t easy, in an environment designed for sharing. In his work on social upkeep, evolutionary biologist Robin Dunbar found that humans gossip (as in they share personal information) for the same reason monkeys groom – to keep tabs on the social world around them (Dunbar, 1996). MindofTwo makes gossip discreet while still shared. Founder Isaac D. Taylor recognized a need for an open forum online where people could easily communicate with one another regarding “real life" issues — with the belief that someone can relate to similar experiences, voice their opinions and/or share best practices as to how they dealt with a particular situation. This belief led him to create MindofTwo.com in 2010 in order to provide such a community of comfort, reassurance, and in the right circumstances, even guidance. Taylor believes, “When people talk about their issues, they don’t really express themselves because they have that fear of what others will think about them. Some people are afraid of being judged. Many have lost family, friends, jobs, and even their lives because of what others thought of them. MindOfTwo is that other outlet that people desperately need.”

If you’d like more information about MindofTwo, or to interview Isaac D. Taylor, please call 310.704.1096 or email: press(at)mindoftwo(dot)com. Or, check them out online at: MindofTwo.com.

One of the conditions that older adults are more susceptible to is diabetes. Often times diabetes is a result of being overweight, which can in turn cause other health issues. For those of you who are a diabetic or pre-diabetic we offer some advice on this condition and how fitness activity can improve this condition. Weight reduction via changes to your diet and exercise regimen can ameliorate the situation. If you have a lot of weight to lose, you may want to begin with a quick weight loss diet.

The onset of diabetes is due to a lack of insulin production and a resistance of your cells to insulin that is produced. Foods that we eat are turned into sugars called glucose and used as energy or stored as fat until it is needed. The pancreas produces insulin which allows glucose to enter the cells of your body to be utilized as an energy source.

When not enough insulin is produced the glucose remains in the blood stream instead of entering the cells, causing the blood sugar level to be elevated. Chronically elevated blood glucose levels causes damage to all body organs, the eyes and kidneys are particularly susceptible. Diabetics frequently suffer with peripheral nerve damage, kidney disease, heart disease, and poor wound healing. Two types of diabetes exist, type 1 and type 2, type 2 is far more prevalent.

How Exercise Can Be Of Assistance

Diabetes in the body can set off a cascade of other problems. Quite a number of seniors are insulin dependent or are taking oral medications to lower their blood sugar. However, diabetes does not have to cause other problems, it can be controlled.

Exercise can help lower your blood sugar. Even if you already have diabetes, you can still exercise and improve your overall fitness and health. You may even discover that your diabetes improves to the point where you are no longer dependent on medication.

Exercise can help you to lower your body weight. Those of us who are overweight have a far higher probability of contracting diabetes. Combining exercise with a sensible diet will help your blood sugar remain constant and not spike signaling increased insulin production. If you have more than twenty pounds to lose you may want to start off with a rapid weight loss diet.

Exercise also lowers other elevated levels such as cholesterol and blood pressure. Elevated blood pressure can put an excess burden on your heart and cause a host of other health problems. Elevated blood pressure puts you at an increased risk for a stroke, heart attach, and kidney malfunction.

Always consult your doctor before beginning any sort of fitness program. They will advise you on what exercises are safe and how long you can work out. Until your blood sugar comes back in line with proper fitness, be aware of times that it is low. Be sure that you keep a sweet snack readily available for times when your blood sugar drops too low.

You do not have to stop trying to become fit just because you have diabetes. An exercise routine will improve your health status and assist with your diabetic condition.

In my early childhood, I enjoyed all the pleasures of an underprivileged lifestyle: no design clothes, underfunded public schools, beater cars and no summer camps for me. But when I was turned on to Internet culture back in third grade I realized I had a knack for turning it into money.

Here are some of the lessons I learned living the startup life:

We all have the ability to spot and jump on opportunities. We are born with this inherent trait and you can develop it over time. It’s a life skill I developed out of survival. But it wasn’t out of fear. I saw it as God’s universal game. I would look at the upcoming holidays and think, “How can I jump on that? How can I make a money dam?” Remember, doing something halfway is hell of a lot better than doing nothing at all.

Opportunities will appear as something completely ironic to you. Once you’re obsessed with a project, you become the master in that industry. Talk to the experts how they become an expert. Many of them are quite subtle in their own ways. You’ll meet some in the weirdest of places. You never know, you could be looking at one right and thinking, “WTF?”

There is a thin line between a positive outlook and psycho crazy. You have to have belief system that gives you the confidence to make something happen. I’m thankful for my weird perception of reality. I love the dramatic thrill of looking evil right in the eyes while others are content with living a fearful existence. We have to accept that we all have weaknesses.

Try to attack your fears early in the game by managing them before they become a problem. If you’re afraid of speaking to a crowd, take some classes to strengthen your overall mentality. Surround yourself with a strong support network. Your best ideas will come from your team. Don’t worry if you haven’t found your muse yet. I haven’t found mine yet, but I’ve met a lot of great people along the way who have helped me along the way. You’ll find people who have great ideas but no way of funding them. We can all work together and you can create anything.

I’ve been trying to enlighten people about a thing called “motivational economics.” Back in the days of World War I and World War II, America had a hard time feeding both the soldiers and the people at home. So the government thought of a way to get the people involved by having them grow their own food from their backyards. Homegrown gardens started popping up all over the place. Political campaigns exploded and slowly relieved the pressure off the government to take care of everything on their own. It helped a nation to stand on its own two feet. Now is the time to do just that. We forgot about our entrepreneurial past. There are millions of things you can do for yourself as well as your community.

If you want to clock in and out of work you might as well be in jail. Do you really want someone watching every move you make? For others this comes with territory of living a secure lifestyle, but a entrepreneurial spirit wants something more than that and will do anything in their power to fight it.

Entrepreneurship, startup, business, startups, start up, entrepreneur, venture capital, angel investing, angel investors, angel investment, climb ladders, do more, early stages, entrepreneurial mindset, investing, mentorship, tech stars, technology, mentors, interactive, leadership, business opportunities, small business, small businesses, motivation, success, helpful, training, encouraging, positive thinking, uplifting, inspiring, strengths, tribes, innovation

NEW YORK – The NFL can’t be upset with so many upsets in the playoffs.

What better evidence is needed that the “anybody can win at any time” mantra is accurate when two No. 6 seeds are in the conference championship games? And nobody would be shocked to see both the Green Bay Packers and New York Jets in the Super Bowl.

Indeed, the wild-card Packers are favored for Sunday’s NFC title game at Soldier Field, home of the champions of their division, the Chicago Bears.

“Yeah, we’re championship caliber,” Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk said. “But championship caliber to us isn’t getting to the NFC championship game. We have a lot higher goals than that. We’re where we want to be. We’ve been saying all year, ‘Just give us a chance to get here.’ Now, it’s up to us.”

And up to the Jets to set up the first Super Bowl involving non-division winners.

“The idea is to win the Super Bowl, whether you do it by winning your division or as a wild card,” Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis said. “Keep winning.”

Long shots going far in the playoffs, even winning Super Bowls, is not unheard of. Consider that since the league went to six playoff teams in 1990 — there were three divisions and three wild cards until 2002 — wild cards have made the title game 14 times. Counting the Packers and Jets, eight of those have occurred since 2005. Two of those wild cards, the 2005 Steelers and 2007 Giants, won the whole thing.

In ’05, ’08 and this year, a wild card got to the conference championship match. No Super Bowl has featured a pair of non-division winners.

“We have a lot more, our season is bigger than just beating the Falcons and going to the NFC championship game,” Packers defensive tackle B.J. Raji said. “We’ve got bigger goals than that. … We expect to win no matter where we go.”

They go to Chicago, where the Bears beat them 20-17 in Week 3, a horrendous performance in which Green Bay set a team record with 18 penalties. And barely lost.

The Packers won 10-3 at Lambeau Field in the season finale to clinch their wild-card spot. They’ve beaten Philadelphia and top-seeded Atlanta in road playoff games, and now are a victory away from becoming the second No. 6 seed to win a conference championship.

Don’t expect the Bears (12-5) to treat the Packers (12-6) like some rank outsider standing in their way. Not with all that history accompanying the longest rivalry in pro football. Not with the way Green Bay’s defense has stymied two of the league’s best offenses the last two weeks, or the way quarterback Aaron Rodgers is playing.

Rodgers, though, has not done much against Chicago this season, throwing for 545 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in the 1-1 split.

Bears coach Lovie Smith expects the usual animosity between the teams, who will face off for the 182nd time, but just the second in the postseason and first since 1941.

“You just look at our history and it does have a respectful tone, but it can be nasty also,” Smith said. “It’s going to be a physical game. We don’t like each other.

“Believe me, there is not a whole lot of love for us coming up north. But games are supposed to be played on the field.”

Hours later at Pittsburgh (13-4), the Jets also could add to the Super Bowl wild-card total against the only previous sixth seed to make a Super Bowl, the Steelers, who then beat Seattle for the 2005 title.

The Jets (13-5) were the fifth seed a year ago and got this far. Indeed, until last year, when the top-seeded Saints and Colts each made the Super Bowl, the No. 1 teams from both conferences hadn’t gotten there since the 1993 season.

So road wins aren’t that unusual, and the Jets are the best example: They are 4-1 in the playoffs under coach Rex Ryan, all of those games away from the Meadowlands.

“We know what it was like to play in a tough environment,” quarterback Mark Sanchez said. “We knew that all of our games were going to be on the road because of our seed. We know how to play on the road; I think we’re better on the road, so that’s a huge help for us. We have a lot of experience doing it.”

- The City of Holland today announced a first-ever Pay It Forward Initiative and website during a public event at “Musicians’ Park” in downtown. The Pay It Forward website can be found at www.payitforwardholland.org.

Starting today, nine groups or individuals will be given $100.00 each in the form of four $25.00 gift cards. Each card is numbered to track the path of giving through the website, encouraging the receiver to tell their story and pass the inspiration on. To motivate additional participants, residents can order their own cards at www.payitforwardholland.org.

“Today, on the day our nation honors Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we kick off Holland’s Pay It Forward Initiative. What better way to answer Dr. King’s famous question, ‘What are you doing for others?’” said Kurt Dykstra, Mayor of Holland. ”Holland’s spirit lies within its generosity, and this community-wide campaign is intended to discover what is possible when we think outside ourselves.”

The campaign was inspired by the 2010 Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, which rated Holland, Michigan the #2 “Happiest & Healthiest Place to Live in America.” Following this designation, and the resulting nationwide media coverage, the City of Holland was given a $250 donation by Ramona L. Scott of Brooklyn, New York. Ms. Scott was so inspired by the spirit in Holland, she wanted to help more by encouraging others to do good for someone else, with or without money.

“The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index brought us and Ramona Scott got us dreaming, now it’s time for us to place action to our words, one person, one act of charity at a time,” added Mayor Dykstra.

Following Ms. Scott’s donation, the City of Holland created the Ramona L. Scott Paying it Forward Fund. The fund currently stands at $900.00. The idea for creating a website to track the progress of Pay It Forward Holland came from local business owners, Brad and Dianne Zeef. Additional support came from Stevens Advertising, who donated the creation of the website and logo design, and Allegra Printing, which donated the first 100 cards.

About Holland, Michigan

The City of Holland, located along Michigan’s West Coast, is home to more than 35,000 residents. It was named the second happiest and healthiest cities in the United States by 2010 Gallup-Healthways Poll, and one of the top cities in the United States that best meets the needs of its residents.

Value toward each other as well as your relative, forces you to much more moisture resistant in addition to awesome even though getting options.

While considering the importance of education in the life of children, most of the parents are tensed to send their children to best of the schools. There is no doubt that many schools must be located near to your neighborhood area that provides good education to your children.

However, you need to do little research about the curriculum of various schools so that you can be sure that your children are also following the same path as you have been since your childhood. Apart from public and private schools, there are Christian schools that impart knowledge about Christianity along with the school curriculum. A parent can distinguish between all the schools and their decision will be dependent entirely on their beliefs, thinking and neighborhood area.

The main focus of Christian schools is religion and you can send your children to such schools if you want to focus on religion in your child’s life. Every individual has its own priority and no one can empower anyone with their own personal beliefs. If you feel that your child is not able to gain the right principles in other schools, then you can consider Christian schools for the right upbringing of your children. There are Christian elementary schools that focus on reading, writing and arithmetic so as to strengthen the primary skills in children.

These schools take students from pre-school to high school to make them prepare for handling all types of situations in the future. So, use Internet to search for a good school that will help your child to have a better and brighter future.

CME Outfitters, LLC, (CMEO) an award-winning accredited provider of multidisciplinary continuing education (CE), in co-sponsorship with USF Health, is pleased to announce an upcoming interactive, evidence-based neuroscienceCME Live and On Demand continuing education activity titled "It’s Relative: Patient-Reported Outcomes in Multiple Sclerosis – Aligning Physician and Patient Perspectives to Optimize Care."

Offered as a simultaneous satellite broadcast, webcast, and telephone audioconference premiering Wednesday, March 2, 2011, from 12:00 p.m.-1:00 p.m. ET, the activity seeks to educate clinicians on current evidence concerning the utility of patient-reported outcomes (PRO) tools and their application to clinical practice in multiple sclerosis care, the value of PRO in designing and refining an individualized course of treatment, and integrating data garnered from such measures to both improve medical care and increase patient satisfaction with the quality of their care and their quality of life with multiple sclerosis. This activity also includes a special "After the Show" segment from 1:00 p.m.-1:30 p.m. ET during which the faculty answers additional audience questions in an informal Q&A session. The recorded webcast will re-air from 4:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. ET. This CE activity will also be available on demand as a webcast, podcast, and telephone audioconference shortly after the broadcast premiere.

There is no fee to participate or receive CE credit for this activity; however, registration is required. Three forms of registration are accepted:
Online: Visit the activity details page at http://www.neuroscienceCME.com/PR538 and click the Register for Live Webcast icon.
Phone: Call 877.CME.PROS (877.263.7767).
Fax: Visit the activity details page at http://www.neuroscienceCME.com/PR538, print and complete the activity details form, and fax to 614.929.3600.

Statement of Need:
With increased focus on individualized treatment in multiple sclerosis, the importance of PRO is evident. While PRO assessments are not replacements for professionally moderated questionnaires and more formal measurements (e.g., the EDSS or MRI imaging), they can serve as an invaluable resource that fosters stronger physician-patient relationships, encourages patients to increase ownership in managing their disease, and addresses patient concerns directly. However, clinicians do not consistently use PRO tools, and questions about their utility remain.

In this neuroscienceCME Live and On Demand activity, expert faculty will review current evidence concerning the usefulness and implementation of PRO tools in clinical practice and discuss the value of integrating PRO data to refine individual treatment and increase patient satisfaction with the quality of both their care and their lives.

Faculty:
Michael K. Racke, MD (Moderator)
Professor and Chairman in Neurology
The Helen C. Kurtz Chair in Neurology
Department of Neurology
Ohio State University Medical Center
Columbus, OH

Benjamin M. Greenberg, MD, MHS
Director, Transverse Myelitis and Neuromyelitis Optica Program
Director, Pediatric Demyelinating Disease Program
Deputy Director, Multiple Sclerosis Program
Cain Denius Scholar in Mobility Disorders
University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center
Dallas, TX

Deborah M. Miller, PhD, LISW
Director of Comprehensive Care at the Mellen Center for Multiple Sclerosis Treatment and Research
Department of Neurology
Associate Professor of Medicine, Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine
The Cleveland Clinic Foundation
Cleveland, OH

Learning Objectives:
At the end of this CE activity, participants should be able to:

Evaluate emerging evidence for the utility of PRO measures and identify methods for application to clinical practice.

Improve assessment of disease status in patients with multiple sclerosis by using validated, patient-reported outcomes tools that are supported by evidence and available guidelines.

Integrate patient-reported outcomes into individual care plans to refine treatment and improve quality of life for patients with MS across the continuum of care.

Target Audience:
Physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals with an interest in multiple sclerosis.

The Paul Mitchell Schools FUNraising Campaign launched a new version of its Web site this week. The new site includes a complete history of the seven-year “FUNraising” campaign, which has raised and donated over $4.6 million to a variety of charitable organizations.

In accordance with the campaign’s commitment to keep administrative costs low, the team who created the new site donated their time and talent to the project. Web developers Blind Acre Media of Columbus, Ohio, and well-known writer and editor Gail Fink, who also manage the Paul Mitchell Schools Web site, newsletters, and other publications, developed the new FUNraising site free of charge.

“In our seven years of FUNraising, every dollar raised has gone directly to the charities,” said Paul Mitchell Cosmetology Schools Dean and Cofounder Winn Claybaugh. “We have no overhead: no salaries, no rent, and no utilities. Our accountants, attorneys, and board of directors all donate their time, and we are extremely grateful to all of them. As a result of their incredible generosity, our FUNraising expenses are little to none: the cost incurred in raising the $4.6 million has been just $68,462—an amazingly low 1.5%, compared to the national average of 25%. In other words, we don’t spend $100 trying to raise $200!”

The original Web site included information about the annual Magic of Memories Dinner, a gala event that celebrates all of the participating schools and announces the FUNraising total for the year. Claybaugh notes that the new site “tells the complete history of our FUNraising campaign, introduces our celebrity partners and the organizations we raise money for, and explains where the money goes and how it is used.”

A “fan favorite” on the new site is last year’s highlights video, featuring singing superstar Donny Osmond entertaining at the 2010 event. The new site also includes downloadable press releases for the media; photo albums showing how the talented and creative Future Professionals and staff members raise the money; video and audio messages from this year’s celebrity partners Betty White, Dolly Parton, Donny and Marie Osmond, Fran Drescher, and Leeza Gibbons, who has been with the campaign since its inception; and a timeline showing the campaign’s history, including photos and quotes from past partners Larry King, Vidal Sassoon, and more.

“We’re especially excited about an upcoming feature: an online donation portal, so people can contribute directly to their chosen charities through the Web site,” Winn adds.

The 2011 campaign kicks off on February 1. Visit http://www.paulmitchellschoolsfunraising.org for more information.

The online advertising company provided $90,435,503 in qualified offers to owners who advertised their timeshare for sale on the company’s website last year. Over 6,300 confirmed offers were sent by BuyaTimeshare.com as legitimate offers thanks to the industry-leading, technological advances of the company’s website. The website’s new technology determines the accuracy of the offer when it is forwarded to the owner.

Such advances are what set the organization apart from its competition according to Wes Kogelman, president and CEO, BuyaTimeshare.com.

"Any company can put numbers on their website saying how many supposed offers came in during the course of the year," said Kogelman. "Our offers are genuine. Thanks to our advanced software, each potential buyer and renter offer is qualified as it is sent to the owner."

"This allows us to create a successful platform where owners, buyers and renters can interact without the need for additional commissions, fees or agents," added Kogelman.

The company’s average offer of $14,197 last year was about 70% of the $20,000 average price of a new timeshare interval, which is excellent value and significantly ahead of the usual prices garnered on the resale market.

Rental activity was also considerable, with the BuyaTimeshare.com website generating $5,198,062 to rent timeshare across 4,595 offers. That $1,131 rental price per week would more than cover an average maintenance fee.

"The average maintenance fee is just under $700 so, with the value that we get for the rental inventory on our site, there’s plenty of cash left over for those owners looking to rent timeshare," said Kogelman.

The company’s ability to attract buyers and renters is directly attributed to the substantial resources directed to search engine optimization, which allows them to be number one on sites like Google for terms such as "buy timeshare" and "buy a timeshare".

"Timeshare buyers are going to find us, there’s no doubt about that," Kogelman said. "Staying number one for these search terms is not easy and we spend a lot of time and money marketing our site in this way. But finding buyers is the only way we are able to keep our advertisers happy and that’s the key to our success."

About BuyaTimeshare.com

BuyaTimeshare.com is an internet advertising and marketing company for timeshare owners who seek to sell timeshare or rent timeshare by owner. The company has been in business since 2000 and was ranked by Inc. Magazine as one of the fastest-growing, privately held companies in the country last year, making the prestigious Inc. 5000 list.

KL Newhouse, The Sports Heiress, the innovative Balla from the Newhouse Sports dynasty, announces The Ultimate Game Changer (UGC): National Youth Challenge Contest to honor a hero who epitomizes the Ultimate Game Changer – Dr. King. In every avenue including playing sports, there is often the opportunity to deliver real and lasting change for life. The Ultimate Game Changer Challenge Contest is an invitation for 12-18 year old youth from across the nation to nominate themself or other youth who are changing the game versus just playing the game in the athletics, academics, or the arts.

This initiative launches on Dr. King’s Memorial Holiday to celebrate Dr. King and call to action the next Dr. King. With the familiar and growing issues facing youth today, it is important to provide a vehicle for their voices to be heard and their triumphs to be celebrated in their community. The Game Changer Youth philosophy is the recognition of individuals who are changing the game with their positive attitude, sound character, and exceptional execution of their sport, academic and artistic endeavor. The Emerging Ballas’ will be announced on April 4, 2011, in honor of Dr. King’s passing, as a tribute to his legacy of courage and vision—the hallmarks of any Game Changer.

“Although known role models exist, we’re looking for the ‘Ballas-in-Training,’ says The Sports Heiress/KL Newhouse. “Our family has a blessed American story particularly because sports provided an opportunity to participate in a wide-range of professional athletics and compete with marked commercial and international success en route to true destiny. My journey, based on the values imparted from my family, is about building a legacy that identifies, celebrates, and motivates the next generation of youth who exhibit “Emerging Balla’ behavior” into purpose and action. Emerging Ballas understand not only how to envision play, execute the plan, and excel with purpose, but, to also contribute to their communities, thereby changing the game.”

The five (5) Finalists who are selected will be featured in the chapter, “The Emerging Balla’-in-Training” in the new book, Evolution of a Balla’: The Transformation of Sports Champions, scheduled for Spring 2011. The contest is open to United States youth ages 12-18 years old in all sports, academics, and arts whose names we project will grace future headlines not only for playing the game but influencing others and changing the community.

CONTEST OVERVIEW:

Nominations are on The Sports Heiress You-tube Channel. See website for upload process.

    Online Nominations Open – January 15 – February 15, 2011

    Fan Voting – February 15 – March 15, 2011

National Finalists VIP Announcement – April 4, 2011

MEDIA OPPORTUNITIES:

Interviews with KL Newhouse, The Sports Heiress, can be scheduled between January 17 – 28, 2011.

Exclusive Opportunity: A limited number of joint interviews with The Sports Heiress and surprise guests from the Evolved Balla’ greats interviewed in the upcoming book Evolution of a Balla’.

ABOUT THE SPORTS HEIRESS:
KL Newhouse, The Sports Heiress, is business & sports author, consultant, speaker, and ambassador of those who are changing the game of life successfully through athletics, arts, and academics. The Sports Heiress has been at the sideline of a famous American sports family dynasty featuring NFL great Robert Newhouse, Track Olympian Fred Newhouse, current NFL Green Bay Packer Marshall Newhouse, and emerging youth hockey elite Isaiah Newhouse. Her upcoming book, Evolution of a Balla, features interviews with or about more than 40 athletic alumni who made headlines while playing sports and others who didn’t, but the one characteristic they all share is changing the game and influencing lives after the sports chapter closed. See website: http://www.evolutionofaballa.com and the Blog: http://www.evolutionofaballa.com/TheSportsHeiress; http://www.youtube.com/TheSportsHeiress.

In support of “Educate to Innovate” and to raise the math and science literacy of the nation, the Army National Guard is bringing its new, interactive Mobile Learning Center (MLC) to Trevor Browne High School in Phoenix, AZ. The MLC, which tours schools and armories throughout the country, will focus on technology while exploring energy efficiency and alternative energy sources through engaging and highly interactive math and science experiences. The goal of the visit to Trevor Browne High School is to increase students’ interest in math and science, and educate them on the many career opportunities in these fields.

"The National Guard’s Mobile Learning Center program brings an exciting new dimension to learning and teaching," said Colonel Diana Craun, Division Chief of the National Guard Bureau – Education, Incentive & Employment division. "The National Guard is devoted to communities and schools like Trevor Browne High School, and to ensuring that our children are prepared to meet the challenges of an increasingly competitive global workforce. The Mobile Learning Center will bring educational opportunities and fun experiences directly to the students at Trevor Brown High School so they are best prepared for a bright future."

The mobile tour’s vehicle, “The Energy Lab”, is a fully mobile 65’ Rapid Deployment Vehicle that transforms into an interactive, remote classroom filled with educational, fun and inspiring learning tools that will encourage high-school students and kids to participate in and excel at science and math. On board the trailer is a 24-seat theater with a powerful sound and lighting system that will provide an enhanced multimedia learning experience while introducing students to the platform of energy and environment. Off board the 27’x27’ tent contains four separate interactive exhibits focusing on the four elements: earth, water, wind and fire.

In 2009, President Obama launched “Educate to Innovate”, an initiative designed to improve the participation and performance of America’s students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The MLC will support the development of STEM education standards across the country and encourage kids to stay in school, study, and graduate.

While the United States boasts great schools, excellent teachers, and successful students, there are also troubling signs that, overall, our students should be doing better in math and science. In the 2006 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) comparison, American students ranked 21st out of 30 in science literacy among students from developed countries, and 25th out of 30 in math literacy. On the 2009 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) math tests, 4th graders showed no signs of progress for the first time in years, and 8th graders tallied only modest evidence of progress.

The MLC began its tour on September 30 during a kick-off event in Washington, DC. The MLC has visited communities in GA, AL, TN, AR, LA & TX and will proceed to visit NV and CA. This route targets schools with below average 2009 8th Grade NAEP scores in both math and science.

For those communities and schools the MLC does not visit, there will be STEM-related education resources available online (http://www.NATIONALGUARD.com/energylab) to students, parents and educators. Tools include pull down teacher’s guides, experiments and resources pertaining to the Energy Lab.

Onsite interviews are available, and media representatives are invited to tour the Energy Lab during its stay in Phoenix, AZ January 18th – 20th.
